Musical Inspiration

Hello Lovelies,

In trying to work on the next entry for Little Island Tales, I ran into a bit of an issue. What issue you ask? Well...I HAVE NO INSPIRATION!!!

At least, not at the moment.

Ok, maybe it's not THAT bad. While I know where I want to go with the story and the steps that are being taken to get there, I'm recovering from one of my normal medical procedures and therefore my brain is just a bit muddy on the uptake (gotta love all them painkillers...buh). I currently can't quite put the sentences together (at least not with impact in a form I like) and so I wanted to take a more human moment to discuss writing and the processes behind it rather than leave you in the hard-vacuum of silence that I have had a bad tendency of doing the last couple months.

I've talked about inspiration before on this site and about the little things that help to push me (and theoretically other writers) to make the things they do. Everything from a wildly overactive imagination to the types of books and movies they read; just about anything in the world can serve as inspiration for the next tale or story. Everyone has their own thing that works at least sometimes to get their blood boiling and get the words flowing.

As such, today I wanted to address music and its role in my own inspirational process. For any of my regular readers, you know my biggest rock tends to be fear and horror. The things that scare me most are the ones that fascinate me the deepest. Monsters, creatures, cryptids, myths, aliens, etc. all lend their own unique touch to the things I create and this is something that is plainly seen in my works; so it raises the question of how does music provide inspiration?

Well, at least for me, music is a much stranger beast than reading a story or watching a movie. Whereas exposure to other general forms of inspiration give me an idea for content and story progression, music provides me a much more ethereal inspiration. I often find that it gives me a sense of emotion, tone, and environment more than anything else. In other words, it gives me a 'feeling' for the world at large in my writing. The music that I find really inspires me varies from day to day and week to week, however will often maintain a similar overall tone.

So what do I listen to?

Well, the common default that I often go back to when actively writing is Rock. There's a wide range here, so depending on the who and what, it may or may not contribute to the tone of any given story. I've often found that more Psychadelic Rock like The Doors tends to work well but, even more commonly, variations within the Metal genre are very effective too (particularly when writing hard action). Artists like Rob Zombie and Powerman 5000 have contributed to some of the more tense or chilling moments throughout my pieces. One artist in particular, Jonathon Young, has proven really entertaining for his Rock/Metal remixes of a number of different songs which have provided me a great deal of new depth to old pieces.

On the flipside, occasionally I need something more atmospheric; something I can hear and listen to but maybe with a deeper tone outside of rock songs. You need something more folky or ambient, something with less hit and more punch. More overall feeling behind it. I've found YouTube has been particularly wonderful for this because you can find a wide range on there. Some of my favorites include old folk songs like 'O Death' (which I've featured before) or 'Misty Mountains Cold' (from Lord of the Rings), Cajun inspired beats such as Kaleo's 'Way Down we Go' and Rag'n'Bone Man's 'Human', or even classical tunes such as Beethoven's 'Moonlight Sonata'. If I'm feeling particularly off, dark ambient music such as ones produced by JediMaster or Two Steps from Hell (Featured above) serve wonderfully to get me the ether mixing.

When all is said and done, music is less about showing us something to inspire us and helping us find that which is resting beneath the surface. It helps us pull up and out, rather than to internalize, those forces and things that would fill our minds to the brim until they overflow.

So, with that said...

What music inspires YOU most?

  1. Rob Zombie and Powerman 5000 - great choices. You do know they are brothers?
Rock-metal-prog rock are my inspirations. Nothing beats a fast battle scene inspiration like Pantera.

  2. I'll listen to the three LOTR soundtracks while writing. Often I make a playlist for fiction works and it's a blend of pop, rock, and new age.

  3. Great choices. I like to listen to a wide range of music, too, especially when I'm writing. Eluvium and Port St. Willow are two of my favorite mellow go-to artists.

  4. I live quite happily without music mostly. Which I am aware is rare.

  5. Robert, I do hope your inspirations comes back as I so enjoy the Little Island Tales. Music and a glass of wine really seems to help me relax and lets the energy flow in whatever direction it chooses. I don't think I have a go to genre, even though, I lean towards rock. I just pick something randomly. It usually helps dictate which type of poem I will eventually write, what is the mood I am feeling. Romantic, adventurous or just some random pondering. Some old Doors will def put me in a certain mystical mood.

  6. Lately, I've been gravitating toward rock bands like Korn, more for the writing rhythm than inspiration. In that sense, Rob Zombie and Powerman 5000 are good, too. ~grin~ Depeche Mode and The Cure are good for actual inspiration for my moody erotica/romance writings. Best wishes on better health and much inspiration.

  7. Sorry you're struggling for inspiration lately! Just caught up on "Little Island Tales" and absolutely adore it. Can understand why you'd need to take a break from it, though. Your own well-being should always come first!

And great post! Music has always been a huge inspiration for my own projects. So many genres motivate me that it'd take forever to list 'em all here, LOL. There's one singer in particular that I like to listen to for Echo Effect, since his voice sounds exactly like Nicholas' always has in my head. (I discovered that singer after the fact, so yeah, it was kinda freaky at first!) I listen to a much wider array of music for my horror project, though. Also, like you, I really enjoy Jonathan Young's covers--was actually in the middle of listening to one when I clicked onto this post, haha.

  8. Don't often find myself listening to music....nor can I say I have been inspired by music.

  9. I prefer silence.

Considering I was one class away from completing a music minor in college, this may sound strange. I can read music. I played musical instruments. I understand the mechanisms at work that create music. But when I'm writing or thinking, I prefer to listen to the rhythms of my thoughts. The music in my words.

I have accepted that I am not actually a writer. At least, not the kind of writer that everyone else seems to be. Name something "every" writer likes/does, and you will find I hate it or I do the opposite.

  10. Sorry to hear of your health struggles and lack of inspiration. I was going through similar "fun times" this summer, so I sympathize.

Unfortunately, I can't write to music. I really wish I could. I even bought some instrumental CDs hoping they'd do the trick, but it was a no go. My characters tell the story, and anything that distracts or drowns out their voices hinders me.

Hope next month is a productive, healthy one for you.

  12. Hi Robert - life has its ups and downs ... I'm enjoying this clip -but usually work without any music ... but at the moment the waves come in and out - and I can hear them all the time ... but I do get inspiration from fellow bloggers who post music up - then I listen sometimes! Cheers and feel better soon - Hilary

  13. Sorry to hear you are struggling! I love music, but I have to admit, when I'm painting, I prefer to be quiet. But, all other times of the day, I would be dancing away! I don't know if that's weird? I hope you get back to your writing soon!

  14. Music that instantly transports me back to when I was young. That always works for me.

  15. Such a loaded question. I love epic music, Two Steps from Hell features quite a bit on Thannor’s Soundtrack. But he also tends to be active for Woodkid, Imagine Dragons and Bastille. I am a bit eclectic in my personal music tastes and Thannor tends to be the same.

When I write from Killian’s POV, he tends to remain happiest when I stay within the acoustical and epic music genres. So my music varies since I switch their POV with each chapter currently.
