Wattpad?

Hello Lovelies,

Today I wanted to take a moment and reach out to you. As many of my readers are not only consistent, recurrent individuals but also writers themselves, I figured it would be best to raise the question to the table and see what kind of response I got.

Do any of you know what 'Wattpad' is?

I had this website recommended to me on my last post. They recommended it as a means of increasing visibility of my works as it seems that some writers have been discovered through Wattpad for both book and movie deals. On further review via their Wikipedia entry, it seems they've been around for about 11 years and are a primarily mobile site. Further inspection reveals that they've probably got a couple million readers that are flipping through the respective pages.

So the question that immediately occurs to me: Should I trust them?

At its face, the idea of being available to a great number of readers that are out to READ my works is incredibly enticing. At the same time, I have nothing more at the moment than a simple recommendation.

As it stands, I accept that my stuff is improving but still needs work. Yet, at the same time, the ideas I have are my own and, even if I might royally screw up something here or there, it's my writing that I have the right to alter and correct. I'm immediately worried about the idea of submitting and posting my works on this random website under the guise my intellectual property might be forfeit because of the medium that it's being provided. In other words, I don't want to create copyright and ownership heart aches in the future.

With that said, I intend to investigate them further, however I trust your opinions and would like to add any first hand accounts to my consideration. Do any of you have experience with or exposure to Wattpad? Good stories? Bad stories? I want to know if it's worth it to work with this site.

Thank you.

- RB

  1. It's a huge site. Sixty million users or something like that. Check with Elizabeth S. Craig. She uses it and has only good things to say about it. Of course, she's posting edited and completed work there.

    1. Will check with her. One of my major concerns is a matter of ownership. It's one thing to post chunks of a given book and then wipe the slate clean once I begin the editing and publishing process (particularly since things get lost or added in the editing process), but it seems like this would be another ball game with Wattpad involved. :/

  3. I attempted it way back when, but to me it is just more work. Yes, people have made deals, got movies, etc. But out of millions, how many? 10? Try to entice you with that to up the stats of their site, while possible, not probable. People have gotten tv deals from twitter accounts. 10 in maybe 10 million again. Can be done anywhere, but will it? Doubtful. Never know though. Do it because you enjoy it, otherwise pffffffffft.

  4. Never heard of it before. Approach with caution I would imagine.

  5. A blogger I followed until she fell out of the blogosphere swore by it. Echoing Delores though. I wonder just how many deals/discoveries are made there.

  6. I've never delved in. Or I might have posted a story there way back when. It's a great site to find free things to read. I've heard of writers who worked a novel on there bit by bit and then went on to publish.

Do your due diligence. Rather than jumping in and posting first, sign up and read. Get a feel for it first. It might be just the community you're looking for.

  7. never heard of this site; but then I'm not a writer by any definition of the word

being a direct descendant; figuratively of "doubting thomas" I'd say check check and double triple check check ☺♥

  8. I don't have any first-hand experience, but I know a few writers who've used it and only seem to have good things to say. I've not heard any horror stories, at least. Possibly a good way of gaining some ongoing feedback?

I've never used watt pad but I've never heard anything bad about it. A lot of folks do put stories out there.

  12. I have never heard about this site, but all I can say is research everything, like you are doing! It took me a year to find a good place to put my art on merchandise. Always read the fine print! Good Luck!
